I guess misconceptions about avant garde music will never die. I was kind of shocked that this artist has a NYTimes write up but not shocked that the comment section is like “meh”
What people don’t get is that hitting the effective sweet spot in the avant garde is really hard. It has to be of pure heart. A real fan can spot insincerity a mile away and it makes the music unbearable. But good intentions don’t offer much musically. It’s almost like an emotional intelligence the ability to get it across in a way that’s satisfying to a serious connoisseur.
That’s why Rousay has received some taste of notoriety. She, and her bandmates here, they’re the real deal and it shows.
