Rating: 5/5

Released this year (2021)

This is an ECM release and does kind of have THAT sound. Very reliably good-super high standards – within a predictable musical continuum – if you’re familiar you know how they roll. They’re sort of like the new Windham Hill for people who are too insecure to admit that Windham Hill is fucking awesome.

To my ears this like tonal jazz with a splash of dissonance supplied mainly from the brilliant Marilyn Crispell, whose performance ensures that this gets a highest rating from me. Lovano supplies her a collection of excellent originals and beautiful playing and she makes the most of it and it may be untoward to just come right and say it but she’s a cut above as an artist.

Lesser known Carmen Castaldi accents the music flawlessly on percussion. He’s never showy, in fact, the entire trio are very polite and musically social distance. Seriously though, the uncluttered approach works fabulously on this record and any of the three are very welcome to come and help me organize my apartment the same way.
