The Past Inside the Present label ensures a level of quality and this record has earned that seal. Ten years ago this would’ve been a clean 5/5 but the field has become so crowded. With a deep listen it becomes clear this is toward the front of the pack with its slow moving melodic loops finding its way into your limbic system but another less flattering thought is, “Didn’t Basinski do this better almost two decades ago?” On the other hand, not everything has to be pioneering.
The bandcamp notes are interesting on this and he mentions Hildegard Von Bingen and then goes on to say his guitar substitutes for the vocals but maybe he should’ve reached out. Not everyone has Julianna Barwick in their contacts but that would’ve made this a 5/5 for sure.
