Daniel Carter, Matthew Shipp – Dark Matrix

Genre: Free Jazz

Rating: 5/5

Two veteran jazz geniuses join forces for, if I got it right, the sixth time. However, this is the first time as a duo. Recently, I’ve been drawn to jazz records with less musicians and not more. I mean, not exclusively, but if I’m deciding between two records I haven’t heard before a smaller ensemble will typically get my time. With two musicians on this level, it’s an absolute delight to hear how they communicate. Ship and Carter were on top of their game in Park West Studios in Brooklyn while recording this record for the Polish label Not Two. Shipp has a deep discography as a bandleader and has also recorded with David S Ware and Roscoe Mitchell as well as others. He’s one of the most respected pianist in the jazz world for good reason that is on good display here with beautifully lyrical free improvisation. Carter is seasoned as well, including appearing on Yo La Tengo’s remake of Sun Ra’s Nuclear War which I love even it doesn’t really add anything. Even with his colorful resume and albums with William Parker, he’s probably best complimented right here with Shipp. The two communicate beautifully and make it seem easy.
