Just for the purpose of clarification for the uninitiated: this is a remix of the record Stay Trippy by Juicy J. The style of mixing is called “chopped and screwed”. The originator of the chopped and screwed DJing style was DJ Screw who died on November 16, 2000. Screw’s sound became synonymous with Houston, Texas and “purple sprite”, a codeine infused drink. The sound is slowed with certain segments cut and fragmented and duplicated and so on. So what I’m reviewing here is dj purpberry’s interpretation not the original record. However, some background on Juicy J is in order. Juicy J is a founding member of Three 6 Mafia and therefore a crucial architect of the southern hip hop sound associated with Memphis, Tennessee. Juicy J has had an incredible career in hip hop spanning 25 years and Stay Trippy which was released in 13 is a fucking banging record. So what I’m judging is whether dj purpberry adds value to the original with his interpretation. The answer is fuck yes. Just being a worthy alternative to the original would be a great accomplishment but for my money dj purpberry’s chopped and screwed version is better and more fun than the original. I’m biased because I love the syrupy chopped and screwed style but still that’s my take. I even listened to the two versions back to back to make sure that’s really how I feel. It really is. dj purpberry is my go to dude for interpretations in the Screw tradition. He carries the torch. I hope this shit is available to listen to until I die. Motherfuck a copyright law.
