Fortunately for me this band has been on my radar from near the get. I’ve always been aware that their music is pioneering futuristic brilliance but this morning my appreciation for this record jumped into another dimension. I don’t understand it or appreciate it anywhere close to perfectly – I mean I know that but I still feel like I understand it well enough to know I’m in the presence of staggering greatness. I’ve always had a soft spot for concept albums starting with The Wall. Like The Wall I see this as an album I can continue to explore for the rest of my life. You can hear Parliament in concept and OutKast in voice and rap pattern and those are great influences but in the strongest sense this is pioneering futuristic music. Even at five years old this is probably thirty years ahead of itself. But still there’s something more I want to say about this record and all the music by this incredible band. It’s geometrical. It has physical shape. This morning the visual patterns and shapes were going through my brain like a video accompanying the music. I’m old and this is something that has never happened to me without drugs. For half of it I was driving to work through beautiful trippy fog. It’s so powerful that it transcends the senses. I’m not even exaggerating. If you open your brain to it this music can induce synesthesia. I checked the popular reviews for this record and it does get love but not nearly enough. This album and this band is still deeply underrated. This is like Ornette level brilliant. I cannot praise it enough or overemphasize its important.
