I feel kind of torn about the rating because this peaks out at a ripping five but unfortunately it doesn’t hold there. It has some great moments of jazz spirituality and maybe even glimpses of In a Silent Way and has sustained moments of, if you’ll work with me here, a typical ECM release which would almost guarantee a four. But occasionally the themes the songs are based around frankly aren’t very good. It takes courage to use a hook. They could get by without them. But it’s live by the sword; die by the sword. The sword isn’t sharp enough because the hook doesn’t have live bait or some other metaphor. I sort of hate penalizing them for trying but there it is.
